A Nigerian opposition candidate has condemned a roadblock and alleged harassment of presidential candidate Peter Obi’s convoy in central Benue State.
Peter Ameh, the Kogi East senatorial candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), described the incident as “ridiculous and unacceptable” and called on authorities to investigate those responsible.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Mr. Ameh said no citizen should face intimidation or obstruction on public roads, warning that the incident violated constitutional rights guaranteeing freedom of movement and assembly.
Reports suggest individuals allegedly backed by political figures in power carried out the obstruction.
Mr. Ameh called on the Benue State Government to openly condemn the attack and ensure Mr. Obi, who represents the NDC, could complete his visit to the state without further interference. He also urged security agencies to hold those involved accountable, regardless of their political affiliations.
