Nigerian president praises son’s youth campaign, denies political ambition

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has publicly commended his son, Seyi Tinubu, for his youth mobilization efforts, while dismissing speculation that the younger Tinubu is preparing to run for public office.

Speaking on Monday at a State House event in Abuja organized by the “City Boy Movement”—a youth organization backing the government’s political agenda—President Tinubu addressed his son directly, praising his grassroots work.

“I got some calls within the last few weeks asking me what Seyi is running for. He’s running after his father,” President Tinubu said.

He praised the movement for engaging young voters without demanding formal political appointments or official titles.

Youth mobilization and public scrutiny

Seyi Tinubu serves as the patron of the City Boy Movement, a national campaign group formed to mobilize young Nigerians behind his father’s administration and policy framework.

The president’s public comments follow heightened media scrutiny and public debate surrounding his son’s political profile and influence within public affairs.

At a colloquium held in Lagos on 12 October to mark his 41st birthday, Seyi Tinubu urged young citizens to take an active role in political decision-making and national development.

Encouraging the group to expand its activities, President Tinubu told his son: “You have only started. Do more. Go further. Serve harder. Set an example that your own children will be proud to follow.”
