The Social Democratic Party (SDP) senatorial candidate for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Olanrewaju Osho, has pledged to tackle rising food costs by harnessing the territory’s vast land resources for large-scale agricultural production.
Speaking during a media roundtable with the Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE) in Abuja on Monday, Osho stated that his vision extends beyond physical infrastructure, focusing on deliberate agricultural policies to boost food security and create job opportunities.
He noted that the FCT, with its expansive landmass and rural communities across all six area councils, possesses significant potential to feed its growing population rather than relying almost entirely on food supplies from neighboring states.
Expanding the FCT development scope
Reiterating his “Aspire++” manifesto, Osho argued that sustainable urban development requires a multi-sectoral approach rather than an exclusive focus on road construction.
Key elements of his agricultural platform include:
- Land identification and farmer support: Identifying unutilized agricultural land across the territory and providing targeted support to local farming communities.
- Youth employment: Leveraging urban and rural agriculture to create sustainable jobs for young people across the six area councils.
- Legislative collaboration: Working alongside the FCT Administration and local community leaders to secure funding and policy support for food security initiatives.
Civic engagement and oversight
Osho promised to maintain regular interaction with residents to ensure federal interventions address ground realities, adding that Abuja has the natural and human resources to become a model of sustainable urban development.
He urged FCT residents to assess candidates based on their concrete plans and capacity to deliver, calling for a new approach to governance that directly improves the standard of living for all capital residents.
