The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has refuted claims made by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDP) regarding a transformer outage at the Lekki Transmission Substation, clarifying that the disruption was caused by severe faults on the distribution network.
In a disclaimer issued on Thursday, 27 August 2026, TCN rejected EKEDP’s public notice, which claimed that TCN’s T11 transformer had tripped unexpectedly and was awaiting inspection.
Fault Origin and Maintenance Response
TCN provided a detailed technical breakdown of the incident, attributing the shutdown to heavy earth faults on EKEDP’s infrastructure:
- Distribution Feeder Failure: The operational disruption began at 04:34 am on 26 August 2026, following the simultaneous tripping of EKEDP’s Oniru and Agungi 33kV feeders due to overcurrent and earth faults.
- Secondary Equipment Damage: The severe distribution fault triggered the inter-tripping of TCN’s TR1-60MVA 132/33kV transformer primary and secondary breakers, producing a loud bang and smoke at the substation.
- Correction and Recurrent Trip: TCN maintenance teams repaired the damaged secondary breaker and restored the system later that day. However, a trial closure by EKEDP on its Oniru feeder caused an immediate repeat trip due to persistent relay faults, requiring further corrective work.
- No Fault on T11 Transformer: TCN confirmed that no outage or fault occurred on its T11 transformer, maintaining that the disturbance was strictly confined to EKEDP’s feeder network.
The transmission company assured affected consumers in the Lekki corridor that engineering crews remain on-site, working to resolve the issue safely and fully restore power supply.
