The General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Emmanuel Ugboaja, has died at the age of 60 following a prolonged illness.
NLC President Joe Ajaero announced the passing to members of the congress’s National Executive Council during an ongoing meeting in Enugu, following official notification from the deceased’s family.
A Pillar of Organised Labour
A seasoned trade unionist and lawyer, Ugboaja had served as the administrative head of the NLC since August 2019, when he succeeded Peter Ozo-Eson.
During his tenure as General Secretary, Ugboaja oversaw the administrative and strategic operations of Nigeria’s central labor union, managing relations with affiliate unions, industrial disputes, and nationwide policy negotiations with both government and private employers.
Key Industrial Negotiations
Ugboaja’s leadership coincided with critical periods of economic tension and policy disputes between organized labor and the Federal Government:
- Minimum Wage Battles: One of his earliest key assignments involved leading complex negotiations over the implementation of the ₦30,000 national minimum wage in 2019, narrowly averting a nationwide strike.
- Policy Mobilization: He remained a central figure in subsequent national campaigns, strikes, and wage disputes, advocating for improved workers’ welfare, economic relief, and labor rights across the country.
