The Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Hulayat Omidiran, has been invested as the pioneer National Matron of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).
The landmark investiture ceremony took place on Thursday, 26 August 2026, in Kaduna, bringing together national executive members, state delegates, and veteran sports journalists from across the country.
Decades of Sports Advocacy
Accepting the role, Mrs. Omidiran pledged to leverage her office and experience to advance the professional development and welfare of sports journalists in Nigeria:
- Three-Decade Relationship: Omidiran highlighted a 30-year history with Nigerian sports and media, dating back nearly three decades to her establishment of the women’s football club Omidiran Babes.
- Recognition and Commitment: Recalling her multiple state and national honors—including SWAN’s recent 60th-anniversary award—she promised to serve to the best of her ability and support the growth of the association.
- High-Level Delegation: The FCC Chairman was accompanied to the ceremony by a delegation of Federal Commissioners representing Osun, Anambra, Enugu, and Bauchi states.
SWAN national leadership emphasized that the appointment of its first National Matron aims to strengthen institutional partnerships and elevate the profile of sports reporting across the nation.
