Tinubu Urges Peaceful Vote in Osun Governorship Poll

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has called on the country’s electoral body and security services to ensure a peaceful and credible governorship election in the south-western state of Osun on Saturday.

The poll is the final off-cycle governorship election in Africa’s most populous nation before the 2027 general elections.

Fifteen candidates are contesting the vote, including the incumbent governor Ademola Adeleke, running under the Accord party banner, and Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to safeguard the integrity of the process, describing the election as a key test of the commission’s preparedness for the upcoming national polls.

The president also directed security agencies to protect voters and polling staff from intimidation and prevent any disruption to the vote.

Off-cycle elections in Nigeria take place outside the general election timetable, typically following legal challenges or court rulings that alter gubernatorial terms in specific states.
