The Abia State Government has commissioned 20 electric buses in Umuahia as part of a joint initiative to accelerate clean mobility and sustainable development.
The launch was witnessed by the Executive Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV), the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).
The delegation, led by MOFI Chief Executive Officer Dr. Armstrong Ume Takang, met with Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti to inspect progress and officially launch the fleet. The project aims to transition public transport toward cleaner fuels, reduce commuting costs, and modernise transit infrastructure across the South-East region.
During the visit, officials highlighted the necessity of integrating energy, agriculture, and transport to stimulate regional growth. The Executive Chairman of Pi-CNG & EV, Ahmed Ismaeel noted that expanding compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicle (EV) adoption would lower transport costs while supporting job creation.
Dr. Takang emphasized that federal development programmes under President Bola Tinubu must reach beyond Abuja to deliver localized economic relief, pointing to joint federal-state investments in clean energy as a key driver for long-term growth. REA Managing Director Abba Abubakar Aliyu also reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to improving power infrastructure to support electric transit networks.
Governor Otti welcomed the delegation, confirming Abia State’s readiness to deepen cooperation with federal entities to attract sustainable investments and expand access to clean energy.
