World Cup over for Ronaldo as Spain strike late

Cristiano Ronaldo’s final World Cup dream has ended in heartbreak after a dramatic stoppage-time winner from Mikel Merino sent Spain through to the quarter-finals.

The 41-year-old Portuguese captain was unable to inspire his side as Arsenal midfielder Merino struck in the 91st minute to seal a 1-0 victory for Spain in a tense round-of-16 clash at the Dallas Stadium in Texas.

Ronaldo, playing in his sixth World Cup tournament, cut a solitary figure at the final whistle as the Spanish players celebrated wildly around him.

Cagey Affair Settled Late

In a match of few clear-cut openings, Portugal’s attack—led by Ronaldo, João Félix, and Bruno Fernandes—struggled to break down a highly disciplined Spanish defence anchored by Manchester City’s Rodri.

The main talking points of the match included:

  • Goalkeeping Heroics: Portugal’s Diogo Costa kept his side level with a spectacular double save in the second half to deny Spain’s frontline.
  • Injury Blow: Portugal lost left-back Nuno Mendes midway through the second half to a hamstring injury, tilting momentum in Spain’s favour.
  • The Decisive Blow: One minute into injury time, a quickly taken Spanish free-kick caught the Portuguese defence off guard. Ferran Torres threaded a pass into the penalty area for Merino to slot calmly past Costa.

The End of an Era?

The defeat likely marks the end of Ronaldo’s legendary international career on the world stage.

The forward forced Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón into a smart save in the first half but grew increasingly frustrated as service dried up in the later stages of the game.

Portugal exited the tournament, having previously beaten Croatia in a dramatic round-of-32 match. Meanwhile, a rejuvenated Spain side advances to the last eight with their sights firmly set on lifting the trophy.
