Tottenham Held by Leeds as Relegation Battle Goes to the Wire

NORTH LONDON — Tottenham Hotspur missed a golden opportunity to pull clear of the Premier League relegation zone as they were held to a tense draw by Leeds United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Knowing a win would move them four points clear of 18th-placed West Ham, Spurs appeared to be on course for safety following a stunning opener from Mathys Tel. However, a late moment of madness from the goalscorer allowed Leeds back into the game, leaving Roberto De Zerbi’s side just two points above the drop zone with two games remaining.

From Hero to Villain

After a nervy first half, the game exploded into life five minutes after the restart. Mathys Tel broke the deadlock with a piece of individual brilliance, curling a spectacular 20-yard strike into the net to send the home fans into raptures.

But the young forward’s night took a disastrous turn 16 minutes from time. Attempting an ambitious bicycle kick inside his own penalty area, Tel caught Leeds defender Ethan Ampadu in the head.

After a VAR review, a penalty was awarded, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin remained composed to slot home the equaliser.

Spurs Pay for Missed Chances

The penalty came just moments after Richarlison had wasted a glorious opportunity to double Tottenham’s lead, blazing over from close range with the goal at his mercy.

As anxiety gripped the stadium, Leeds grew in confidence. Despite 13 minutes of added time being played, Spurs struggled to test the Leeds goal. In fact, it was the visitors who nearly snatched all three points:

  • The Save: Deep into stoppage time, Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky produced a world-class save to tip Sean Longstaff’s goal-bound effort onto the crossbar.

The Survival Race

Following back-to-back wins against Wolves and Aston Villa, this result feels like a significant setback for De Zerbi. While Spurs remain outside the relegation places, their failure to see out the game leaves them looking over their shoulders at West Ham.

With only two matches left to play, the fight for Premier League survival looks set to be decided on the final day of the season.
