Nigeria’s NDC Zones Presidential Ticket to South, Clearing Path for Peter Obi

ABUJA, Nigeria — The newly formed Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the south of the country, a move widely interpreted as a boost for the ambitions of Peter Obi.

The decision was announced on Saturday during the party’s national convention in Abuja and later confirmed in a brief post on the party’s official X account: “NDC Presidential ticket is zoned to the South!!”

The convention, which is being attended by heavyweights including Mr. Obi and the former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, marks a significant moment in the realignment of Nigeria’s opposition forces.

A Growing Opposition Force

The NDC has fast become the focal point for political defectors seeking a fresh platform ahead of the next general election. The zoning announcement follows a week of dramatic expansion for the party:

  • Mass Defection: On Tuesday, 17 members of the House of Representatives moved from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the NDC.
  • Top Leadership: The party’s national leader, former Bayelsa Governor Seriake Dickson, formally received Mr Obi and Mr Kwankwaso into the fold last Sunday.

The ‘Obi Factor’

Mr. Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, joined the NDC after a brief and turbulent stint with the ADC. He cited “worsening internal crises” and “external interference” as his reasons for leaving his previous platform.

By zoning the presidency to the south, the NDC has effectively cleared a primary hurdle for Mr. Obi, while Mr Kwankwaso—a northern political powerhouse—is expected to play a central role in delivering the party’s northern mandate.

Restructuring the Party

Beyond the zoning decision, the convention agenda includes the ratification of an amended party constitution and the election of new national executives.

Analysts suggest that the rapid influx of lawmakers and high-profile figures from the ADC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) signals that the NDC is positioning itself as the primary challenger to the ruling party in 2027. The party’s leadership has emphasised a need for stability and a “focused” opposition to avoid the internal legal disputes that have hampered other parties.
