Nigeria, US Strengthen Security Ties After High-Level Washington Talks

WASHINGTON D.C. — Nigeria and the United States have pledged to deepen their cooperation on counterterrorism and regional stability following a series of high-level meetings in Washington.

The Nigerian National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, concluded a three-day working visit to the US this week, during which he met with Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The talks aimed to reinforce what officials described as a “longstanding strategic partnership” between the two nations.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that the discussions focused on intelligence sharing and the growing security challenges in West Africa and the Sahel.

A Frontline Strategy

Mr Ribadu emphasised Nigeria’s role as a “frontline state” in the fight against terrorism, particularly in the Lake Chad Basin. He told US officials that Nigeria remains committed to a “whole-of-government” approach—combining military action with economic development and deradicalisation programmes.

The meetings covered several key areas of cooperation:

  • Counterterrorism: Strengthening the fight against violent extremism and transnational organised crime.
  • Intelligence Sharing: Enhancing the flow of information to respond to “asymmetric threats” in the Sahel region.
  • Defence Capacity: Reviewing ongoing US support for Nigerian security institutions.

The Sahel Crisis

A central theme of the visit was the evolving security situation in the Sahel, where a wave of coups and rising insurgency has created a volatile environment.

Mr Ribadu met with Undersecretary for Political Affairs Allison Hooker to review progress under the Nigeria–US Joint Working Group. He expressed Nigeria’s appreciation for American security assistance and reaffirmed the roadmap for future military and border security collaboration.

US Commendation

American officials reportedly commended Nigeria’s leadership role in regional peace efforts. The US delegation acknowledged Nigeria as a vital strategic partner in Africa, particularly in upholding democratic values and regional economic resilience.

The visit concluded with both sides expressing optimism about the partnership. They agreed to maintain regular diplomatic dialogue to address common global challenges and ensure the effective implementation of ongoing security initiatives.
