Deadly Explosion Strikes Near Delhi’s Historic Red Fort

New Delhi, India – At least eight people have been killed and 20 injured after a car exploded near the historic Red Fort landmark in Delhi, police confirmed on Monday. The incident occurred close to the 17th-Century monument, a major tourist attraction that sees thousands of visitors daily, and is situated just metres from a bustling trading hub.

When: The blast happened at 18:52 local time (13:22 GMT).

Where: Near the Red Fort in Delhi.

Victims: Eight confirmed dead and 20 injured.

Vehicle: Police spokesperson Sanjay Tyagi confirmed the explosion occurred in a Hyundai i20 car.

Cause: Police have not yet determined what caused the blast.

Police Investigation Underway

Delhi’s police commissioner stated that the slow-moving vehicle exploded while stopped at a red light. However, Delhi City Police spokesperson Sanjay Tyagi later told the BBC that the vehicle was in motion at the time and was carrying three people. Mr. Tyagi had previously confirmed the death toll of eight and 20 injuries resulting from the incident.

PM Offers Condolences

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shared his condolences, stating he is reviewing the situation and offering sympathy “to those who have lost their loved ones.”Security has been heightened across the capital as authorities continue to investigate the cause of the deadly explosion.
