Nigerian Military arrests couple accused of supplying arms to terrorists

An elite Nigerian military task force has arrested a husband and wife accused of supplying a large cache of weapons to terrorist groups operating in the country’s North West region.

The suspects, identified as Abdullahi Balarabe, 40, and his wife, Shafaatu Abdullahi, 18, were apprehended at a security checkpoint in Saminaka, Kaduna State.

The military’s Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace (JTF OPEP) confirmed the arrest in a statement, noting that the operation was based on actionable intelligence received from a security agency in Plateau State.

During the arrest, troops recovered 1,207 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, believed to be en route to armed groups operating in the North West.

Major Samson Zhakom, the spokesman for the military task force, stated that the two suspects and the recovered ammunition are currently in custody for further investigation, with the goal of dismantling the wider gunrunning network.

The General Officer Commanding JTF OPEP, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, commended the troops for their vigilance, emphasizing the critical importance of inter-agency cooperation in combating criminal activities in the region.
