Istanbul, Turkey
Liverpool slumped to a shock 1-0 defeat against Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday, continuing an unconvincing run of form for the English champions.
Victor Osimhen’s 16th-minute penalty was enough to hand the Turkish giants a surprising victory in Istanbul.
The result marks the first time Liverpool have suffered back-to-back defeats under manager Arne Slot, following their weekend loss to Crystal Palace in the Premier League. A series of late winners had previously masked a stuttering start to the season for a squad that underwent a significant transformation over the summer.
In response to the poor showing at the weekend, Slot made four changes to his starting line-up, notably leaving key players Mohamed Salah and the club’s $168 million signing, Alexander Isak, on the bench.
Slot had been scathing about his side’s first-half performance against Palace, where only goalkeeper Alisson Becker prevented a rout. However, the Dutchman saw little improvement in Istanbul, with his collection of star names delivering another disjointed display.
The victory is a major boost for Galatasaray, who were thrashed 5-1 by Eintracht Frankfurt in their opening Champions League fixture.
