Engineers in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, are working to fix a major technical failure at a key electricity substation that has left several residential areas without power since Sunday.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said a circuit breaker damaged by an electrical fault at the Kubwa transmission substation caused the outage, cutting bulk supply to local distribution networks. The trouble began at 09:39 local time on Sunday, 20 September, when the 33kV feeder tripped due to an earth fault. Although local distributor Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) inspected the line and cleared it for reconnection, a second attempt to restore power at 18:34 led to a more severe breakdown. The sudden surge damaged an interrupter head within the feeder’s circuit breaker system, rendering it inoperable. As a result, thousands of residents across FO1, Dantata Estate, Byazhin, Byazhin Across, and Gbazango remain without electricity.
In a statement, TCN management expressed regret over the prolonged blackout and assured affected customers that engineering crews are working to complete repairs and restore power as quickly as possible.
