The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned two new 100MVA, 132/33kV power transformers at the Ijora Transmission Substation in Lagos State, expanding the facility’s total transformation capacity from 90MVA to 230MVA.
Speaking at the official event, TCN Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sule Abdulaziz stated that the project directly supports the Federal Government’s drive to modernize critical power infrastructure and keep bulk transmission capacity ahead of generation growth.
Technical Upgrade and Distribution Impact
The commissioning replaces two ageing 30 MVA transformers with two 100MVA units, delivering an additional net capacity of 140MVA to the grid node.
Key operational metrics and details of the upgrade include:
- Capacity Enhancement: Total transformation capacity at Ijora increased to 230MVA, resolving existing transmission bottlenecks and expanding operational flexibility.
- Offtake Capacity: The upgrade allows the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) to wheel higher volumes of bulk power to commercial, industrial, and residential zones within its franchise area.
- Project Funding and Execution: The project was funded by the World Bank under its ongoing support for Nigeria’s power sector and executed by Messrs Shanghai Electric Limited.
Strategic Grid Objectives
The expansion forms part of TCN’s broader nationwide programme to reduce technical transmission losses, improve national grid resilience, and support the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda for industrial competitiveness.
The commissioning ceremony was led by the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, alongside TCN executives, contractor representatives, and key power sector stakeholders.
