TCN Commissioning Triples Power Capacity at Apapa Road Substation

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has officially commissioned the upgraded Apapa Road 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Lagos, tripling its bulk power transmission capacity from 60MVA to 180MVA.

Speaking at the formal commissioning ceremony, TCN Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz highlighted that the facility’s expansion will significantly improve grid stability and power availability for critical industrial and commercial hubs across Lagos State.

Infrastructure Upgrade and Project Execution

The upgrade project was funded through a grant intervention from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in partnership with the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Key technical and operational milestones of the project include:

  • Capacity Expansion: The installation and energization of two new 60MVA power transformers, alongside modern Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) technology, increased total substation capacity to 180MVA.
  • Distribution: The expanded capacity enables the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) to off-take higher volumes of bulk electricity for delivery to industrial and residential corridors, including Apapa Causeway, Ijora, Amukoko, Ajegunle, Apapa Wharf, and Tin Can Island.
  • Project History: Executed by Japanese firm Takaoka Engineering Co. Ltd., with preparatory management by Yachiyo Engineering Co. Ltd., the project forms part of the broader Emergency Rehabilitation and Reinforcement of Lagos Transmission Substations agreement originally signed in November 2018.

Government and Development Bilateral Support

The commissioning was led by the Minister of Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, alongside executives from TCN and foreign development partners.

Abdulaziz commended the Federal Government and the Lagos State Government for supporting the execution of the project, while appealing to international partners for similar grant interventions to upgrade other critical transmission nodes across the national grid.
