The Association of West African Legislative Correspondents (AWALCO) has nominated Comrade Grace Ike, Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, for a regional award scheduled for November in recognition of her leadership and contributions to media practice.
The nomination was announced during a courtesy visit by an AWALCO executive delegation led by President Innocent Odoh to the NUJ FCT Secretariat in Abuja.
Recognizing Leadership and Media Standards
Mr. Odoh noted that Ike—the first woman to chair the NUJ FCT Council—was shortlisted following an internal assessment of media leaders advancing public service and democratic accountability across the region.
Key details of the engagement and nomination include:
- Award Background: Originally conceived to align with the silver jubilee of the ECOWAS Parliament, the recognition highlights Ike’s track record, including her prior leadership of the House of Representatives Press Corps.
- Institutional Collaboration: AWALCO and the NUJ FCT Council agreed to collaborate on capacity-building seminars, workshops, and conferences focused on legislative reporting, governance, and democratic development across West Africa.
- Focus on Ethical Journalism and Welfare: Responding to the nomination, Ike reaffirmed her administration’s focus on journalists’ welfare while urging reporters across the sub-region to prioritize accuracy, fairness, balance, and investigative depth.
AWALCO Financial Secretary Favour Olise praised Ike’s mentorship of early-career journalists and encouraged sustained institutional partnerships to elevate professional reporting standards across ECOWAS member states.
