French teenager killed in World Cup celebration tragedy

A 17-year-old girl has died after falling under a lorry while celebrating France’s World Cup semi-final victory over Morocco.

The accident happened just after midnight in the northern town of Aulnoye-Aymeries, where thousands of football fans had gathered in the streets following the national team’s 2-0 win.

According to the police, the teenager had climbed onto the side of a moving lorry with other supporters when she lost her footing and fell onto the road, where she was run over.

Emergency services attempted to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Three onlookers were taken to hospital to be treated for shock and minor injuries.

The driver of the lorry has been arrested and will undergo routine alcohol and drug testing as police launch an investigation into the fatal incident.

French authorities noted that climbing onto moving vehicles has become a common, though highly dangerous, trend during major football celebrations, despite repeated safety warnings.

The tragedy overshadowed what police described as otherwise largely peaceful celebrations across France. Security forces had been braced for potential unrest similar to the disturbances that followed Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League triumph in May. However, officials confirmed that only 10 arrests were recorded in Paris, with few disruptions reported elsewhere.
