Trump claims ‘breakthrough’ Iran talks as Israel strikes Tehran

Donald Trump has claimed that the United States and Iran have held high-level discussions aimed at a “complete and total resolution” of hostilities in the Middle East.

Writing on social media on Monday, the US President announced he had postponed threatened strikes on Iranian power plants for five days to allow for what he described as “productive conversations.” The announcement triggered an immediate drop in global oil and gas prices as markets reacted to the potential de-escalation.

However, the diplomatic breakthrough has been flatly denied by Tehran, with the Iranian parliament speaker dismissing the claims as “fake news” designed to “manipulate” the energy markets.

‘One more chance’

Speaking shortly after his initial announcement, Mr. Trump struck a characteristically firm tone, warning that Iran had “one more chance” at peace. The President’s move to pause military action comes as his administration faces mounting pressure to prevent a full-scale regional war.

Any such deal would likely involve:

  • A permanent ceasefire between US-aligned forces and Iranian proxies.
  • Nuclear concessions and a new framework for regional security.
  • The lifting of specific energy sanctions in exchange for a verified halt to missile production.

Denials and ‘Market Manipulation’

The reaction from Iran was swift and dismissive. Following reports from state-run news agencies, Iran’s foreign ministry issued a formal statement denying any direct talks with Washington.

The Speaker of the Iranian Parliament suggested the claims were a strategic ploy by the White House to stabilize oil prices, which have seen significant volatility since the latest round of hostilities began.

Strikes in the ‘Heart of Tehran’

Despite the talk of diplomacy, the military reality remains grim. Israel has confirmed it is conducting operations in what it calls the “heart of Tehran.”

On Monday, we saw footage of:

  1. A massive explosion at a known Iranian navy base.
  2. A major fire at a building linked to a US-sanctioned electronics firm.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) say these strikes are a direct response to a barrage of missiles fired by Iran towards Israeli territory earlier this week.

The ‘Point of No Return’

The human cost of the conflict continues to climb. The Red Cross has warned that the Middle East is reaching a “point of no return,” while the Lebanese health ministry reports that more than 1,000 people have been killed since Israel began its offensive operations in the north.

For now, the world waits to see if the five-day window announced by Mr. Trump will lead to a genuine diplomatic opening or merely serve as a brief pause before further escalation.
