Ghana has launched a digital platform allowing members of the public to check marriage and divorce records, as well as verify licensed venues, marriage officers, and Imams.
The application, known as Marrify, was developed by Marry Right Ghana Limited in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and unveiled in Accra.
The registry covers civil, customary, and Islamic marriages, drawing data from the Registrar-General’s Department, judicial courts, local assemblies, and the official Ghana Gazette.
Users can search the platform using names, certificate numbers, churches, or Gazette references.
Protecting couples from fraud
Speaking at the launch, Gender Minister Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey urged prospective couples to verify details regarding their partners, officiants, and venues before taking marital vows.
“You would not have to take a person’s word for it, even in the most trusted relationship,” Dr. Lartey said. “You can verify with this app… so that you do not invest so many years and resources only to find out that all the investment has gone in vain.”
The minister called on the developers to maintain close ties with religious bodies, traditional authorities, and state institutions to ensure the database remains accurate and updated.
Ongoing updates
In addition to marriage registries, Marrify includes divorce records linked to formal court judgments.
However, administrators cautioned that data entry remains ongoing, noting that a search yielding no results should not be taken as definitive proof that an individual has never been married.
The platform also allows individuals and institutions to submit existing certificates and supporting documentation for official verification.
