Prominent Nigerian Senator Tambuwal Quits PDP Over ‘Persistent Crisis’

SOKOTO, Nigeria—Aminu Tambuwal, the former Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives and a key figure in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has resigned from the party and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a resignation letter dated 11 March 2026, the Senator representing Sokoto South cited “persistent internal crises” and “growing divisions” within the PDP as the primary reasons for his departure.

“After deep reflection and extensive consultations with my political associates… I have decided to resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party with immediate effect,” Mr Tambuwal stated. He added that lingering leadership disagreements had made it “increasingly difficult” to remain within the party’s ranks.

A Political Heavyweight on the Move

Mr. Tambuwal’s defection is seen as a significant blow to the PDP, a party he once served as a two-term governor of Sokoto State. Despite his exit, he expressed gratitude to the party for providing the platform that allowed him to serve as Speaker and Governor.

Explaining his choice of the ADC, he described the move as an effort to provide a “credible political alternative” for Nigeria. “My decision is guided by the conviction that Nigeria requires a stronger political platform built on integrity, accountability, and inclusiveness,” he said.

A History of Defections

Mr. Tambuwal is no stranger to shifting political allegiances, a common feature of Nigeria’s fluid political landscape:

  • 2011–2015: Served as Speaker of the House under the PDP.
  • 2015: Joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) and was elected Governor of Sokoto State.
  • 2018: Defected back to the PDP, securing a second gubernatorial term in 2019.
  • 2023: Elected to the Nigerian Senate under the PDP banner.

Political analysts suggest that his move to the ADC will significantly alter the political dynamics in Sokoto State, where he remains one of the most influential power brokers. The PDP has been struggling with internal friction following the 2023 general elections, and Tambuwal’s exit may signal further fragmentation within the country’s main opposition bloc.
