Nigerian Lawmaker Pledges Partnership with Online Media to Drive National Growth

ABUJA — Ifeoluwa Ehindero, a prominent member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has called for a deeper collaboration between the legislature and the digital press to foster national development. Speaking at the National Assembly on Wednesday, Mr. Ehindero—who chairs the House Committee on Student Loans, Scholarships, and Higher Education Financing—emphasised that the media is an indispensable partner in the political process.”There is no way we can do this job successfully without partnering with the media,” Mr. Ehindero told a delegation from the Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE). “The support I have received from the media space during my election and the build-up was wonderful, and it has given me a new perspective on the impact the press can have.”

A Focus on Youth and ‘Unprecedented’ Results

Representing the Akoko North-East/North-West constituency, Mr. Ehindero is part of a younger generation of lawmakers being elevated under the leadership of Speaker Abbas Tajudeen. During the meeting, he highlighted the rapid progress made during his first 100 days in office, including:

Employment: Securing positions for over 60 young people in various government agencies.

Healthcare: Renovating seven primary healthcare centres and providing essential medical equipment.

Maternal Health: Delivering aid packages to more than 350 pregnant women.

Mr Ehindero praised the ACOE for its commitment to professional ethics in the often-volatile online space, describing the association as “noble and innovative.”

Recognition for Service

The visit concluded with the ACOE presenting Mr. Ehindero with the “Champion of Journalists Award.” The honour recognises his contributions to the welfare of media practitioners and his legislative focus on vulnerable groups, including women and the youth. Shola Akingboye, Chairman of the ACOE, lauded the lawmaker as a “friend of the media,” noting that his commitment to quality legislation and empowerment has provided a roadmap for sustainable development in his constituency. The partnership is expected to formalise in the coming months, with the ACOE set to provide digital coverage for the lawmaker’s upcoming major empowerment initiatives.
