Nigerian Energy: High-profile Launch for Landmark Renewable Power Study

Political heavyweights Atiku Abubakar and Babatunde Fashola are set to unveil a definitive new study on Nigeria’s renewable energy laws, as the continent’s most populous nation grapples with its transition toward green power. The book, Renewable Energy: Law and Policy in Nigeria, a Crosscutting Perspective, authored by Assistant Professor Bitrus Bulama of the American University of Nigeria (AUN), will be officially launched on Wednesday, 11 February, in the capital, Abuja.

A ‘Pivotal’ Legal Roadmap

The launch comes at a critical juncture for Nigeria. Despite holding vast potential for solar, wind, and hydropower, the country has long struggled with a fragile national grid and a heavy reliance on fossil fuels. Professor Bulama’s work aims to provide a legal and policy framework to navigate these complexities. The event, to be held at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) headquarters, is expected to draw a significant gathering of legal experts, diplomats, and policymakers.

High-Level Support

The involvement of two of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures signals the perceived importance of the publication. Atiku Abubakar, Nigeria’s former Vice President and veteran politician will lead the presentation while Babatunde Fashola a former Minister of Power and Governor of Lagos State—himself a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN)—will join the unveiling, bringing his experience in infrastructure and energy reform.

Calls for Educational Reform.

Ahead of the launch, Idehai Frederick, Chairman of the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria, described the book as a “landmark endeavor.”Mr. Frederick called on the federal government to integrate the text into the national academic curriculum, arguing that the next generation of legal and environmental researchers requires a “crosscutting perspective” to drive innovation.”This is a meticulously researched work that arrives at a pivotal moment,” Frederick said. “We call on the diplomatic community and global policymakers to not only support this publication but to actively adopt its insights.”
