Lagos, Nigeria – Nigerian mobile operator 9mobile has rebranded as T2, signalling its ambition to become a digital-first telecom company. The relaunch, announced by CEO Obafemi Banigbe in Lagos, is described as a strategic overhaul focused on innovation and an improved customer experience.
The rebranding is a move to transition into a fully digital operator, using cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and advanced analytics to deliver personalised products and faster service rollouts. This new approach is aimed at meeting the needs of Nigeria’s growing population of startups, creatives, and remote workers.
The rebrand follows a significant three-year national roaming agreement signed in July with MTN Nigeria, which will allow T2 customers to access MTN’s extensive network across the country. The partnership is a major step toward improving coverage, particularly in underserved areas, and reflects a growing trend of collaboration within the Nigerian telecom industry.
The company, which began its journey as Etisalat Nigeria in 2008, has faced a series of challenges, including mounting debts that led to a restructuring and rebranding as 9mobile in 2017. Banigbe acknowledged the past difficulties, stating that they had “forged resilience,” and dedicated the new brand to “every Nigerian dreaming of something better.”
