Awka, Nigeria – Unidentified assailants have attacked the office of local vigilante operatives in the Umunze community, located in Anambra State’s Orumba South Local Government Area, in Nigeria’s south-east.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, resulted in approximately five operational vehicles being set ablaze, along with damage to parts of the building housing the security operatives. An eyewitness reported that the attackers invaded the premises, firing indiscriminately. During a gun duel with the vigilante operatives, one security operative sustained a fatal injury. The assailants fled the scene before the arrival of a police-led joint security force.
The spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack, stating that the police-led joint security force has since secured the area. He added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the incident and called for collaborative efforts from local communities to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
Police authorities have indicated that further developments regarding the ongoing investigation will be communicated.
