In a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in Abuja, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), presented a comprehensive review of the 2023 General Election and outlined key reforms to enhance the electoral process.
The Commission has identified 142 recommendations for improvement, categorized into administrative, legislative, and stakeholder actions. Key areas of focus include:
Electoral Reform: Implementing measures to prevent electoral malpractices, such as buying up Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) to disenfranchise voters.
Voter Accreditation: Reviewing the use of PVCs as the sole means of identification, considering alternatives like computer-generated slips.
Diaspora Voting: Exploring options for Nigerians living abroad to participate in elections.
Electoral Offences Tribunal: Establishing a separate agency to handle the registration and regulation of political parties.
Voter Education: Enhancing public communication to combat fake news and misinformation.
Prof. Yakubu emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders, including security agencies, mobile network operators, and civil society organizations, to ensure the successful implementation of these reforms.
