UYO, NIGERIA – Police in Akwa Ibom State have apprehended a suspected serial ATM fraudster, Chibuzor Amaechi, in the state capital, Uyo. The suspect, who hails from Ubima Village in Rivers State’s Ikwerre Local Government Area, was arrested on Saturday, July 26, 2025.
According to a statement released on Monday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, Mr. Amaechi specialises in swapping unsuspecting bank customers’ ATM cards and illicitly withdrawing funds.
DSP John disclosed that operatives tracked and arrested the suspect along Abak Road, Uyo, following a distress call. The suspect had been captured by the banks’ CCTV cameras, leading to his swift identification and arrest on the bank premises.
Upon searching Mr. Amaechi, seven different ATM cards from various banks, suspected to be stolen, were recovered. In a video confession, the suspect reportedly admitted to operating alone and carrying out his illicit activities across both Rivers and Akwa Ibom States.
The police spokesperson added that one of his victims, from Ikot Inyang village, had identified the suspect and provided useful information to the police. Preliminary investigations are ongoing, and the suspect will be charged in court upon their completion.
