Nigerian Electoral Commission Trains Parties on Digital Candidate Nomination System

ABUJA, NIGERIA – Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has conducted a two-day refresher training for political party officials on the use of its digital Candidate Nomination Portal (ICNP). The initiative, held on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, aims to minimize errors and enhance transparency in the upcoming bye-elections and the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections.

The workshop, hosted at INEC Headquarters in Abuja, brought together representatives from registered political parties, including those previously trained for the 2023 General Election. May Agbamuche-Mbu, National Commissioner and Chairperson of the Legal Services, Clearance and Complaints Committee, stressed the importance of accurate nominations, describing them as the “very foundation upon which elections are conducted.” She warned that errors in candidate submissions could be “potentially detrimental to both the party and its candidate.”

Acknowledging past challenges such as incomplete forms and improper document attachments, Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu stated that the training was designed to “bridge those gaps” and equip officials with the necessary knowledge and skills. Samuel Omale, Assistant Director in the Legal Drafting and Clearance Department, clarified that the workshop’s strategic focus was to deepen the capacity of party officials and familiarize them with the Commission’s internal procedures, including live demonstrations of the ICNP. He expressed optimism that the exercise would lead to improved accuracy in submissions and a more collaborative framework between INEC and political parties.
