Nigeria: NiMet Forecasts Widespread Thunderstorms and Rain Across the Country
Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted a period of thundery and rainy weather across various parts of the country from Monday to Wednesday. The outlook, released on Sunday in Abuja, indicates varied weather patterns across Nigeria’s distinct geographical regions.
Regional Forecast Breakdown
Northern Region: From Monday morning, parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna states are expected to experience thunderstorms, with or without accompanying rain. The rest of the northern region is forecast to be sunny with intermittent cloud cover. In the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with rain are anticipated over areas of Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Kano, Katsina, Gombe, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Kaduna states.
For Tuesday, most of the northern region will see sunny skies with patches of clouds. However, scattered thunderstorms and heavy rains are possible in the morning over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Sokoto, Jigawa, Bauchi, and Kaduna states. Later in the day, thunderstorms with light rains are expected over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Gombe, Borno, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, and Bauchi.
By Wednesday morning, thunderstorms are anticipated over parts of Zamfara, Kebbi, Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, and Sokoto states. These could intensify into heavy rains in the afternoon and evening over parts of Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Jigawa, Taraba, and Adamawa states.
Central Region: On Monday morning, thunderstorms with rain are expected over parts of Niger, Plateau, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), while other areas will see sunny conditions with cloud patches. Isolated thunderstorms, with or without rain, are forecast for the afternoon or evening over parts of Plateau, the FCT, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, and Niger states.
Tuesday morning will bring thunderstorms with light rains to parts of the FCT, Niger, Kogi, and Benue states. Later in the day, thunderstorms with light rains are envisaged over parts of Nasarawa, the FCT, Benue, Kogi, and Plateau.
For Wednesday, cloudy skies are generally anticipated across the central region during the morning. Thunderstorms with moderate rains are then expected throughout the region in the afternoon and evening.
Southern Region: The southern region is expected to have cloudy skies on Monday, with prospects of morning light rains over parts of Ogun, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states. Afternoon or evening thunderstorms with light rains are also anticipated over parts of Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, Oyo, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states.
On Tuesday, cloudy skies are forecast, with chances of morning rains over parts of Akwa Ibom and Cross River states. The afternoon and evening periods are likely to see thunderstorms with light rain across the region.
Wednesday is predicted to bring prospects of light rains across the entire southern region throughout the day.
Public Advisory
NiMet has advised the public to take adequate precautions, particularly in areas prone to thunderstorms, as strong winds may precede the rains. Residents are urged to ensure that loose objects are secured to prevent collision and potential damage.
