Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) process and the scheduling of outstanding bye-elections. The announcement was made by INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu during a meeting with media executives in Abuja.
Professor Yakubu stated that the electoral body had met and was finalising the details for both activities, which would be made public within the next 24 hours.
The INEC Chairman also provided updates on other electoral activities. He noted that primaries for the Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were ongoing and would conclude on Monday, 30th June 2025, with elections planned for 68 constituencies across the six Area Councils.
Turning to the Anambra State governorship election, Professor Yakubu reminded attendees that the campaign period had commenced on 11th June 2025 and would continue until midnight on Thursday, 6th November 2025, ahead of the election on Saturday, 8th November 2025. He urged media organisations to promptly apply for accreditation to cover the election once the portal opens.
Addressing the issue of applications from associations seeking registration as political parties, the INEC Chairman clarified the commission’s position amidst recent speculation. He affirmed that INEC would continue to be guided by the law and treat all requests fairly, regardless of the status of the promoters. He announced that INEC had received letters of intent from 110 associations and was diligently processing these requests. A full list of these associations, including their proposed names and pro tem officials, would be made available on the INEC website and social media platforms.
Professor Yakubu concluded by reiterating the commission’s appreciation for the media’s role in covering electoral activities and looked forward to their continued support.
