The Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the transparent conduct of the Osun State governorship election, describing the exercise as a successful litmus test for the electoral body.
The praise from the media umbrella body comes four days after the conclusion of the off-cycle election in Osun State
Call for Electoral Reforms and Enforcement
In a statement issued by BON Executive Secretary Yemisi Bamgbose, the organization noted that the operational conduct of the Osun election, if maintained and improved upon, could serve as a model for future national elections.
Key highlights from the statement include:
- Security Deployment: BON praised security agencies for maintaining order and providing adequate coverage, which helped reduce tension and curb electoral violence across polling units.
- Prosecution of Offenders: The organization urged INEC and relevant law enforcement agencies to strictly enforce electoral laws by prosecuting individuals arrested for electoral offenses to serve as a deterrent.
- Sustaining Standards: The media body called on the electoral commission to build on the logistical and technological successes recorded during the Osun poll ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
With the conclusion of the Osun governorship contest, the electoral commission’s focus now firmly shifts toward full-scale operational preparations and strategic logistics for the 2027 general elections.
