Nigeria Grapples with Rising Cases of Telecom Infrastructure Vandalism

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has sounded the alarm over the increasing vandalization of critical national digital infrastructure, with over 147 cases of fibre cuts reported in less than two weeks. According to Auwal Abdullahi, NCC’s head of quality of service, this trend poses a significant threat to national security, public welfare, and the economy.

“Telecommunication services are crucial for ensuring national security, particularly for addressing security issues that require effective communication,” Abdullahi emphasized. “Without a robust telecommunication infrastructure, the public cannot fully enjoy the services provided.”

The NCC is taking steps to mitigate the effects of fibre cuts and improve infrastructure resilience. Abdullahi revealed that the commission is working to operationalize the Digital Infrastructure Initiative (DII) order and implement the Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) Act, which provides provisions for prosecution.

“Anyone found liable for damaging or disrupting CNI will be prosecuted moving forward,” Abdullahi warned. The NCC is also working with key stakeholders to ensure installations are done in a well-secured manner, following international standards.

A Growing Concern

The frequency of fibre cuts highlights the vulnerability of Nigeria’s digital infrastructure. With the country’s increasing reliance on digital services, a stable telecommunication infrastructure is essential for growth and development. The NCC’s efforts to address these challenges are a crucial step towards protecting Nigeria’s digital assets and ensuring the resilience of its critical national infrastructure.
