Nigeria’s Labour Party has expressed its sadness at the death of its former presidential campaign director-general, Doyin Okupe.
Mr Okupe, 72, died in Lagos on Friday after a long illness.
Labour Party National Chairman, Julius Abure, described Mr Okupe as a “great personality” and said he would be “sorely missed”.
Mr Abure recalled Mr Okupe’s role as a placeholder for the party’s vice-presidential candidacy in 2023, which he later relinquished.
“His active participation in LP’s push for the 2023 presidency clearly revealed his charisma and statesmanship,” Mr Abure said.
He noted that although Mr Okupe resigned from the party last year, he continued to offer advice.
“We cherished his short but impactful association with the party leadership, great virtues we will be missing in him,” Mr Abure said.
“Certainly, Nigeria has lost an astute politician whose desire for a great nation was unquestionable,” he added.
