Former Immigration Officer Arrested for Arms Trafficking in Nigeria’s Capital

Nigerian police have intercepted a former immigration officer attempting to sell sophisticated firearms to criminal groups operating in the forests between Abuja and Kaduna.

The dismissed officer, who has not been named, was apprehended following an intelligence-led operation, according to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command.

Officer Mustafa Mohammed, head of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, told journalists in Abuja that the operation had prevented the weapons from reaching bandits, potentially averting significant harm.

“Acting on intelligence, the command intercepted these guns from a dismissed immigration officer attempting to sell them to bandits terrorising the Abuja-Kaduna forest,” Mr Mohammed stated. “The intelligence was received in time, and the arms were intercepted during the attempted delivery.”

Among the recovered weapons was a Scorpion CZ EVO3, a modern, fully automatic firearm equipped with a silencer. Police also recovered 52 rounds of ammunition.

FCT Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu, revealed that 300 suspects had been arrested in operations between January 1st and February 28th, 2025. These operations included raids on known criminal hideouts across the FCT, including areas such as Dei-Dei, Karu, and Gwarinpa.

“These decisive actions, driven by intelligence and executed with tactical precision, have led to the arrest of 300 suspects and the recovery of a significant cache of arms, ammunition, and illicit substances,” Mr Disu said.

The police have also indicated that abandoned buildings, often used as hideouts, will be subject to ongoing monitoring and raids.
