Nigerian security forces have rescued six abducted travelers and recovered ₦800,000 taken from them by armed bandits along a highway in Katsina State.
The rescue operation was carried out on 22 August 2026 by troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation Fansan Yamma, in Dandume Local Government Area.
Key Details of the Operations
A statement released on Sunday by military spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja outlined two successful interventions by Sector 2 troops in Katsina:
- Highway Rescue and Recovery: Troops responded to a distress call after terrorists intercepted a commercial vehicle along the Dandume–Sheme Road and abducted six passengers. Soldiers engaged the group in a firefight, forcing them to flee into nearby bushland. All six hostages were rescued unhurt, and ₦800,000 in cash extorted by the attackers was recovered and returned alongside the vehicle under police supervision.
- Kankara Patrol Engagement: In a separate operation on 21 August along the Maraban Kankara axis, troops ambushed a group of armed bandits, forcing them to retreat in disarray and abandon an operational motorcycle.
Military authorities reiterated that aggressive offensive patrols will continue across the North-West region to deny criminal groups freedom of movement and restore security to vulnerable transit corridors.
