Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Marks 60th Birthday with Mercy

In a remarkable display of compassion, Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has pardoned 40 prisoners to commemorate his 60th birthday. This decision reflects the governor’s commitment to rehabilitation and second chances.

Key Highlights of the Pardon:

  • 15 Convicts Freed: 15 prisoners will be released outright, effective January 12, 2025.
  • Death Sentences Commuted: Several death sentences will be commuted to life imprisonment.
  • Reduced Sentences: Others will see their prison terms reduced, fostering hope for reintegration into society.

The pardon was recommended by the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, which the governor chairs. Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, announced the decision, highlighting the governor’s dedication to justice and compassion.

Notably, Governor Aiyedatiwa chose to forgo his birthday celebrations in honour of the late Secretary to the State Government, Tayo Oluwatuyi (Tuykana), who passed away last weekend. A statement signed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary Ebenezer Adeniyan says his actions are in line with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
