Nigeria’s PDP Apologises for Assault on Journalist

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nigeria has apologised after one of its staff members assaulted a journalist from The SUN newspaper.

The incident occurred on Monday at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, where Emmanuel Okoronkwo, a staff member, allegedly attacked Ndubuisi Orji, a correspondent for The SUN.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, expressed regret over the incident and assured that it would be investigated.

“The PDP strongly condemns and completely dissociates itself from such acts of violence and attack on members of the press and the institution of the media,” Mr Ologunagba said.

He added that the party is committed to upholding the rule of law and democratic principles of press freedom, transparency, and openness.

The PDP Press Corps had earlier condemned the assault, describing it as a breach of Mr Orji’s fundamental human rights and an undermining of the core principles of free speech and media independence.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of journalists in Nigeria and the need for political parties to respect the rights of the media.
