Apple to Update AI Feature After Inaccurate News Alerts

Apple has announced plans to update its artificial intelligence (AI) feature that has been generating inaccurate news alerts on its latest iPhones. The company acknowledged concerns over the feature, which has been summarizing news articles and sending them as notifications to users.

The BBC had complained about the feature after it generated a false headline about a man accused of murder, and another incorrect summary about a darts championship. Apple said it would release a software update in the coming weeks to “further clarify” when the notifications are summaries generated by the Apple Intelligence system.

The company said its AI features are in beta and that it is continuously making improvements based on user feedback. The feature is optional, and users can report concerns if they receive an unexpected notification summary.

The issue has raised concerns about the reliability of AI-generated content, with Reporters Without Borders calling on Apple to disable the feature. Apple is not alone in rolling out generative AI tools, but its feature has faced criticism for producing inaccurate summaries.
