A powerful earthquake has struck China’s Tibet region, killing at least 53 people and injuring 62 others. The 7.1-magnitude quake hit the holy city of Shigatse on Tuesday morning, causing widespread damage and triggering a series of aftershocks.
The earthquake, which had a depth of 10km, was felt as far away as Nepal and parts of India. Shigatse, considered one of the holiest cities in Tibet, is a popular destination for climbers and tourists.
Chinese state media reported that over 1,000 houses were damaged in the quake, and several strong aftershocks have been recorded. A researcher at the China Earthquake Networks Center said that while another earthquake of around magnitude 5 may still occur, the likelihood of a larger earthquake is low.
The Tibetan region is prone to earthquakes, lying on a major geological fault line. The area has been under tight Chinese control since the 1950s, with limited media and internet access.
Eyewitnesses described the moment the earthquake struck, with one hotel resident saying it felt like the bed was being lifted. Helicopters were seen circling above the city as residents rushed out onto the streets.
