On the eve of the 66th Conference of ECOWAS Heads of State, civil society organizations from Nigeria, including WADEMOS, Tournons la Page and the Transition Monitoring Group, have called on ECOWAS leaders to implement reforms aimed at strengthening democratic governance and stability in the region.
The groups, which met in Abuja on Friday, December 13, 2024, expressed their commitment to consolidating democratic values and urged ECOWAS to adopt provisions limiting the mandates of Heads of State and Government.
Marie Josiane Ngah, Project Coordinator, WADEMOS called for urgent and structural reforms to strengthen the prerogatives of the Commission and Parliament, as well as measures to support citizen participation in decision-making and political processes.
Prof. David Dosseh, National Coordinator, Tournons La Page in Togo emphasized the need for ECOWAS to strengthen its credibility by successfully carrying out reforms essential to strengthening its legitimacy.
Their recommendations come as ECOWAS prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary, and amid growing challenges to democratic governance, respect for human rights, stability, and integration in the region.
