West Africa: ECOWAS Parliament Speaker Wins Praise for Regional Efforts

Nigeria’s Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has praised ECOWAS Parliament Speaker, Memounatou Ibrahima, for fostering cooperation between national parliaments and the subregional parliament. Akpabio commended Ibrahima’s leadership and diplomatic efforts since taking office, particularly in engaging institutions and addressing regional challenges.

During a working visit to the National Assembly, Ibrahima led an ECOWAS Parliament delegation to discuss the subregion’s socio-political situation and explore solutions to its challenges. Senator Barau Jibrin, Deputy President of the Senate and First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, received the delegation on behalf of Akpabio.

A statement by Ismail Mudashir, Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on Media and Publicity says Senator Akpabio highlighted Ibrahima’s achievements, stating, “She has been up and doing in terms of giving leadership to the parliament… trying to chart a better course for the parliament to make sure that she brings parliamentary diplomacy to bear.” He emphasized Ibrahima’s efforts to strengthen cooperation with national parliaments and address regional issues.

This development comes as the ECOWAS Parliament focuses on enhancing legislative capacity development in West Africa.

The National Institute of Legislative Studies (NILS) has partnered with the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) to implement a $1.1 million project grant agreement, targeting capacity development in ECOWAS countries and the ECOWAS Parliament.
