The United Nations Country Team in Nigeria has visited Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, to assess the situation after severe flash flooding caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam.
The team, led by UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Mohamed Malick Fall, met with affected people, government officials, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to discuss the response to the disaster.
At least 300,000 people have been displaced and are in need of humanitarian assistance, with many having been affected by conflict and insecurity prior to the floods.
The UN has allocated $6 million from the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund to support the response, with more funding expected.
The Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Zulum, thanked the UN and NGO partners for their support, saying, “Our priority is to rebuild the lives of affected people and ensure they do not stay in temporary shelters for more than two weeks.”
The UN has warned that the flood-affected people are experiencing a crisis within a crisis, with the floods occurring at the height of a severe food insecurity and malnutrition crisis.
