Kano, Nigeria — Engineers are working to restore full electricity supply to parts of northern Nigeria’s commercial hub, Kano, after severe weather triggered a major fault on a key transmission line earlier this week.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said the outage along the 132kV Kumbotso–Dan Agundi Line 1 began at 22:05 local time on Monday, 22 September, when heavy rainfall and strong winds caused the system to trip on an earth fault. The affected line was immediately isolated to allow technical crews to conduct a full inspection.Inspections completed on Tuesday revealed structural damage between two transmission towers, including a tilted cross-arm and a snapped conductor.
According to TCN management, maintenance teams must remove and reinstall the damaged cross-arm before the broken cable can be repaired.
To cushion the impact on residents and businesses across Kano Metropolis, grid operators have re-routed electricity loads from the affected Dan Agundi transmission substation to alternative substations within the local distribution network.
In a statement released on Thursday, TCN apologised for the disruption and assured consumers that repair work is underway to restore normal bulk power supply as quickly as possible.
