Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has inspected advanced military hardware in the Czech Republic as West Africa’s largest nation seeks to modernize its armed forces in the face of ongoing security challenges.
Attending the Czech Air Force Days at Mošnov Airfield in Ostrava, Mr. Matawalle reviewed a range of land and air platforms intended to support Nigeria’s fight against armed banditry and insurgency.Accompanied by senior defense officials and executives from Nigeria’s National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) and the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), the delegation examined key military technology, including:
Aircraft: The L-39 Skyfox light attack aircraft and the L-410NG multipurpose transport plane.
Small Arms & Armor: Assault rifles (BREN-2, BREN-3, M4, AR-15) and protective gear manufactured by the Colt CZ Group.
Communications & Surveillance: Tactical radios and VERA passive surveillance systems produced by MESIT.
Czech defense suppliers assured the delegation of their readiness to provide technology and long-term support for Nigerian military operations.
Alongside the equipment exhibition, Mr. Matawalle held bilateral talks with senior Czech military leadership, including the Chief of the General Staff, Lt. Gen. Miroslav Hlaváč, as well as the commanders of the Czech Land and Air Forces. Discussions focused on tactical training, maintenance support, and defense technology transfers.Czech military chiefs expressed their commitment to supporting Nigeria’s armed forces as the country continues efforts to stabilize affected regions.
