ABUJA — A political support group, the Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV), has welcomed the federal government’s decision to release accumulated allowance payments to academic staff across Nigeria’s public tertiary institutions.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi, and secretary, Segun Ogedengbe, the group described the disbursement of the eight-month Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA)—covering January to August 2026—as a demonstration of good faith by the administration.
The funds apply to eligible academic staff in federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. TMV noted that the release aligns with the 2025 agreement reached between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). ”We commend the move by the federal government as it will guarantee stability in the academic calendar of the tertiary institutions, unlike in the past when Nigerian tertiary institutions witnessed prevalent industrial actions by the academic staff,” the group stated.
Highlighting broader reforms, TMV praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for maintaining regular salary disbursements and securing retirement benefits for tertiary education staff, contrasting the current stability with two decades of frequent trade disputes between successive governments and university unions.
