Security forces have been deployed across parts of Sokoto metropolis following the stabbing of a prominent Islamic cleric, Malam Musa Lukwa, immediately after Friday prayers.
The attack occurred at a mosque in the Mabera area of the city, where a worshipper stabbed the cleric twice in the neck before being overpowered and killed by congregants.
Police spokesman DSP Ahmad Rufa’i confirmed that the cleric is receiving treatment at the Specialist Hospital, Sokoto, and is in stable condition.
The violence stems from a disputed sermon previously delivered by the cleric, which some local scholars considered offensive. The cleric had formally petitioned the state government four days prior regarding death threats, while another individual linked to earlier threats remains on trial.
The incident triggered youth protests in several commercial areas, including Sahara, Bello Way, and Aliyu Jodi, forcing shop owners to close businesses over fears of escalating unrest.
Police stated that an investigation is underway into both the stabbing and the mob killing of the suspect, appealing to residents to remain calm and avoid mob justice.
