LAGOS — Troops operating in northwestern Nigeria have disrupted a key terrorist supply chain after intercepting a commercial vehicle carrying hidden motor fuel and motorcycles along the Gurbi–Zurmi transport corridor between Katsina and Zamfara states.
The operation, carried out by troops from Sector 2 of the Joint Task Force Operation FANSAN YAMMA, followed intelligence reports of movement along the route, which links several areas long troubled by armed groups. Security forces stopped a commercial utility truck that attempted to bypass established security checkpoints.
Upon searching the vehicle, soldiers discovered four new, packaged motorcycles and 15 jerrycans containing 450 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), which had been concealed alongside containers of cooking oil. The vehicle’s driver, identified as Abbas Umoru, was arrested at the scene. Military officials said an initial investigation suggests the fuel and vehicles were destined for armed enclaves operating in the border region between Katsina and Zamfara. Armed gangs, locally referred to as bandits, rely heavily on motorcycles for rapid mobility across the region’s rugged terrain, as well as regular fuel supplies to sustain raids on remote communities.
The suspect and the seized goods remain in military custody as investigations continue into the wider supply network.
