ABUJA — The Democratic Front (TDF) has asserted that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) remains the only political party with a genuine, widespread grassroots presence across Nigeria, dismissing claims of formidable strength by opposition parties.
In a statement signed by Chairman Danjuma Muhammad and Secretary Wale Adedayo, the group said an in-depth political analysis shows that while the APC enjoys substantial goodwill among its elected officials and supporters, opposition parties are bogged down by internal rancor and legal turmoil following their primary elections.
Opposition fragmentation and “social media” campaigns
TDF pointed to the massive crowd at the recent APC presidential campaign flag-off in Kaduna as an intimidating display of strength that underscores the ruling party’s dominance.
The group criticized opposition figures—specifically naming African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) counterpart Peter Obi—accusing them of prioritizing manufactured scandals over substantive policy critiques.
“The absence of opposition parties at the grassroots did not come as a surprise,” TDF noted, adding that opposition campaigns remain largely confined to social media.
Furthermore, the group argued that both Atiku and Obi damaged their credibility by U-turning on their earlier support for fuel subsidy removal to exploit global price pressures for political points, which many Nigerians view as transactional politics.
Concluding its assessment, TDF maintained that the APC’s proven pedigree in grassroots mobilization, macroeconomic recovery, and landmark infrastructure projects positions the ruling party to comfortably win the January 2027 presidential election.
